Day tour to discover the native town of St. Francis of Assisi!

I’ll pick you up from your hotel in Florence (or in another town in Tuscany) and drive you to Assisi (170 km/104 miles South of Florence), in the Umbria region, on the western flank of Monte Subasio;  birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan religious order in the town in 1208, and St. Clare, the founder of the Poor Sisters, which later became the Order of Poor Clares after her death.

We’ll start with a visit of the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi: the Franciscan monastery, il Sacro Convento, and the lower and upper church of St Francis were begun immediately after his canonization in 1228, and completed in 1253; the lower church has frescoes by the late-medieval artists Cimabue, Jacopo Torriti and Giotto; the upper church houses frescoes of scenes of the life of St. Francis ascribed to Giotto, and artists of the circle of Pietro Cavallini from Rome. After lunch in a typical restaurant we’ll visit of the Basilica of Santa Chiara (St. Clare) with its massive lateral buttresses, rose window, and simple Gothic interior, begun in 1257, contains the tomb of the namesake saint and 13th‑century frescoes and paintings. Then we’ll walk Piazza del Comune with its ancient Roman Temple of Minerva. Our last stop will be at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli (St. Mary of the Angels), which houses the Porziuncola: a small church from where the Franciscan movement started.

I am  not going to give you a lecture – unless you want to – I will be informative but I won’t overdo with too many dates and names, I will make your visit fun with anecdotes and legends, you will have time to enjoy a typical local meal, a coffee or an ice cream: I know you are here on holiday and your holiday is meant to be relaxing and fun.
