 ANDREA DEL SARTO(Andrea d'Agnolo, Florence 1486-1530)
When Andrea, known as "del Sarto" from the profession of his father Agnolo di Francesco, a tailor, finally opened his own shop in Florence in 1508, Raphael had just left for Rome, leaving him a figurative heritage which he tempered with that of Leonardo and Fra Bartolomeo. A pupil of Piero di Cosimo, Andrea was always attentive to the newest innovations in painting, adopting them without exaggeration. A painter of tranquil, pleasant style, he moved frequently, to Rome (1511 and 1514), to Venice and as far as the court of Francis I of France, although the center of his activity was always to remain Florence, where his projects included the frescoing of the cloisters of the Annunziata and the Scalzi churches. His importance to the development of Italian painting lies also in the artistic heritage received from him by the Mannerist generation, from Pontormo to Vasari.
