 ARNOLFO DI CAMBIO(Colle Val d'Elsa c.1245 - Florence 1302)
A disciple of Nicola Pisano, Arnolfo subtilissimus et ingeniosus magister, as he was called by the Perugians in 1277, owes his immense fame to his work as architect rather then as sculptor. Up to the 19th century his statues, refined baldachins, tombs, and fountains were considered secondary, if not negligible, as compared to his religious and civil architectural projects (in Florence Santa Croce, the Cathedral and Palazzo Vecchio). Moreover on the Tomb of Bonifacio VIII the artist artist called himself architectus, referring also however to his funerary monuments, whose complex and "humanized" structures marked a turning point in this field, almost anticipating the humanistic formula of the early 15th century. Topday, his sculptures reveal above all that "dolce still novo" which conferred on Arnolfo a dignity equal to that of Giotto and Dante.
