 ANTONELLO DA MESSINA(Messina c.1430- 1479)
An artist apparently at a disadvantage due to having been born in a relatively isolated area far from the great Italian art centers of the 15th century, Antonello was in reality highly stimulated by the vivacious, international atmosphere of Naples at mid-century. It is here that he probably encountered Flemish art, of which the Neapolitan Bartolomeo Facio was also a passionate admirer. Excelling also at portraiture, Antonello made a crucially important journey to Venice in about 1475, from where he went on to Milan. His San Cassiano Altarpiece (fragments in Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum) was to be a fundamental reference point for Veneto artists.
