ANDREA PALLADIO

(Andrea di Pietro della Gondola, Padua 1508-Maser, Treviso 1580) "Guided by natural inclination, I turned in youth to the study of Architecture.....". With these words Palladio began the Preface to his treatise entitled The Four Books of Architecture, published at Venice in 1570. He, the son of a miller, had been passionately interested in architecture since boyhood. Having gone to Vicenza to work as stone-cutter, Andrea found a protector in the man of letters Gian Giorgio Trissino, who allowed him to travel by his side and to visit the great Italian architectural works. The reconstruction of the Palace of Reason at Vicenza (1549) gave Palladio his first important chance to show his talent. Architect of the magnificent country villas around Venice, he designed the churches of San Giorgio Maggiore (1566) and the Redentore (1577-92) in Venice. (From "Italian Art" Edited by Gloria Fossi, Giunti).
