ARCH OF “ARGENTARI”

Or arch of the silver changers, built by the money-changers’ guild in A.D. 204 to honor the imperial family of Septimius Severus – adorning the arch is a relief portraying Septimius Severius, Julia Domna, and their sons Caracalla and Geta, whose figure was cancelled after he was murdered by his brother - ; the monument consists of two pillars, faced with marble and travertine, supporting a marble architrave, abundantly decorated mostly with a plant motif.
